That approach still gets the job done. A skilled installer can route cabling through a finished home without visible damage or a mess of surface-mounted conduit. But it takes considerably more time and care, working cable through wall cavities, roof space and subfloor without being able to see the path ahead.
When security is planned during construction instead, while cabling is still accessible, the result is a cleaner installation and a system that is ready from the day the keys are handed over.
This is how In Line Electronics approached a recent custom home build for Cavalier Homes on the Mornington Peninsula.
From afterthought to blueprint
Security is often treated as one of the last decisions on a build, worked out once the owner has moved in and can see what the property needs.
Planning it in from the pre-wire stage changes that. Cabling for CCTV, alarm sensors and intercoms can be run straight through open studs and trusses, rather than threaded blind through a finished structure later.
It also means the system can be designed around how the owners actually intend to use the property, not fitted around whatever is left once construction is finished.
1. Getting cabling in before walls close
The single biggest advantage of planning security during construction is visibility. Once plasterboard goes up, cabling has to be routed through wall cavities, roof space and subfloor without being able to see the path ahead. A skilled installer can still get it done cleanly, but it takes considerably more time and care than running cable through an open frame.
Completing the pre-wire during the early construction stage avoids that added time and complexity, and gives more flexibility over where cameras, sensors and access points can go.
2. Coordinating with the build program
Security cabling has to fit around the same trades and timelines as everything else on site. Working alongside the builder rather than after them means the pre-wire happens at the right stage, without holding up other work or being missed once walls are closed.
For builders managing multiple trades on a program, having a security partner who understands construction sequencing removes one more thing to coordinate.
3. Security and everyday convenience together
A new build is also the right time to think beyond security alone. Video intercoms can be integrated with garage door access, giving family and friends a way in without using the front entry. Alarm and garage control can be combined onto a single remote.
These are small conveniences on their own, but they are far easier to plan in during construction than to retrofit afterwards.
4. Integrating CCTV, alarm and access control from day one
CCTV, alarm systems and access control work best when they are designed together rather than added separately over time. A camera positioned to also cover a monitored entry point, or an alarm system wired alongside the intercom, gives a more complete result than three systems installed independently.
Planning this during construction means the systems can be designed to work together from the outset, rather than connected up after the fact.
5. A case in point: Cavalier Homes, Mornington Peninsula
In Line Electronics was engaged by Cavalier Homes as the electronic security trade on a custom home build on the Mornington Peninsula, from the pre-wire stage through to final commissioning after handover.
The completed system includes:
- Bosch and Hikvision CCTV cameras installed throughout the property
- A commercial-grade alarm system with remote arming and disarming
- A video intercom with an internal room station, integrated with garage door access
- A single remote operating both the alarm and the garage
- A 32 inch monitor in the home office for live CCTV oversight
Because the cabling was planned and installed during construction, none of this needed to be retrofitted. The system was fitted out and commissioned after handover, and was ready to use from day one.
